Risk of hypertension and long work hours – What a new scientific study reports
Working for long hours can lead to “hidden” health problems that can’t even occur in medical examinations, as revealed by a new scientific study from Canada. One of them is high blood pressure. Results came after a study, conducted by Quebec’s Laval University, which examined more than 3,000 employees over a five-year period. During those five years, they were asked to wear an automatic pressure gauge from time to time, making at least 20 measurements a day. It was found that those who worked more than 49 hours a week were – on average – 70% more likely to have “hidden” high blood pressure and 66% more likely to have permanent, clearly overt, hypertension. Also, for those who worked between 41 and 48 hours, the risk was increased by 54% and 42% respectively. The pressure, which was above 140/90 mmHg at rest and 135/85 at work, was considered high. Nearly one in five workers (19%) were found with permanent hypertension (several were already taking anti-hypertensive drugs), while 13% were “hidden” , so they were not on medication. It is known that both “hidden” and overt hypertension are associated with an increased cardiovascular risk. According to researchers, working long hours can affect the heart, so you need to monitor your blood pressure often.
