Cycling and walking “save” from serious diseases – What new research reports

According to a new British scientific study, people who go to work on foot or by bicycle face less risk of becoming seriously ill (eg from cancer) or dying prematurely, compared to those who drive. Researchers, led by Dr. Richard Patterson of the University of Cambridge’s Epidemiology Unit, who studied data on more than 300,000 people over a 25-year period and published it in The Lancet Planetary Health magazine, said that as the Covid-19 lockdown limitations are removed, it’s an opportunity for people to develop healthier habits for moving to work. Two in three (66%) of the study participants went to work by car, 19% by public transport, 12% on foot and 3% by bicycle. The study found that compared to those who drive, people who prefer riding their bike to work have a 20% lower risk of premature death from any cause, a 24% lower risk of cardiovascular death (from heart attack, stroke, etc.). 16% lower risk of cancer death and 11% lower risk of cancer diagnosis. According to the Athens Agency, walking to work was associated with a 7% lower risk of developing cancer than driving. Furthermore, those who go by train / metro at work have a 10% lower chance of premature death, a 20% lower risk of cardiovascular death and a 12% lower chance of being diagnosed with cancer. This is probably because they usually walk or ride a bike until they reach the train / metro stations.
