Many studies have shown that poor sleep has a negative effect on metabolism. The best part is that a single night of restless sleep can sabotage our efforts for proper nutrition and make us more “vulnerable” to unhealthy food. This combination obviously increases the risk of obesity, which in turn will cause much more problems in our health.
The solution
Matthew Walker, a sleep scientist and author of Why We Sleep, says that the key to getting a good night’s sleep is to lower the core temperature of our body. This drop in temperature begins two hours before bedtime and is directly related to our biological clock but also to melatonin, the sleep hormone, which then begins to be produced. Room temperature plays a key role. If our bedroom is too hot, then we “sabotage” all stages of sleep and get closer to this vicious circle. According to Matthew Walker, the best temperature ranges from 15.6 to 19.4 degrees Celsius. Another way to improve our sleep is a warm bath, one to two hours before we go to bed. Research has shown that hot water helps lower our internal temperature.
