Are you getting enough fibre? 4 signs that whisper “insufficiency”!

Fibre is a complex carbohydrate derived from plants and it is a very important part of our diet. Fibre is divided into soluble and insoluble: the former reduces sugar levels and the latter promotes good bowel function. The recommended daily dose is about 20 to 30 grams per day.   So, now that we’ve established how beneficial fibre is, let’s see which foods contain it. Fruits, vegetables, legumes, oats, nuts, and whole-grain products are the ones with the highest fibre content.  If those foods are “too healthy” for you and you’re not consuming enough of them, you should check out the signs below that indicate you probably need to consume more fibre.

  • You rarely visit the toilet: As we mentioned earlier fibre is good for the gut, so as a result, it activates it. When you don’t eat much fibre, you don’t visit the toilet that often and you may even suffer from constipation. Or when you do, it may last longer than it should.
  • You are always hungry: Fibre causes the feeling of saturation, as it doesn’t dissolve immediately and the body processes it for a long time.
  • You lack energy: If you feel weak throughout the day, then it’s because of your diet as it probably doesn’t provide you with the energy you need to cope with your responsibilities. When you consume fibre, everything in the body moves slowly. For instance, your blood sugar won’t rise sharply, but slowly and steadily. As a result, energy releases gradually and you never run out of it.
  • You have increased cholesterol levels and high blood pressure: Fibre helps lower cholesterol and triglycerides, which are directly related to blood pressure.
