Are you a bear, a dolphin, a lion or a wolf? Discover your chronotype and how it affects your sleep and productivity

We all have our own internal “clock”.  This “clock” determines the time we go to sleep and wake up. For example, I am what we call a “morning person”, while my best friend is a “night owl”.  It was Michael Breuss, a diplomate of the American Board of Sleep Medicine, member of the American Academy of Sleep and author of several books who classified humans into four different chronotypes: the bear, the dolphin, the wolf, and the lion.

The bear

This category includes the largest part of the population, which is about 55%.  The “bear” has no problem sleeping at night and waking up in the morning being fully energetic upon waking.  So, if you are a bear then schedule the most serious tasks until 2 am. After lunch, productivity drops. The “bear” type can only do lighter chores from 2 to 4 pm.

The lion

About 15% of people belong to this category. The “lion” loves waking up very early (for example at 6 am), and usually has finished the usual chores before others even wake up, which can be around 9 am to 12 pm.  Although the “lion” will also take a nap around noon, they won’t have enough energy to do much activity. As the hours go by, their energy levels drop and they will probably go to bed around 10 pm. They also avoid nights out.

The wolf

About 20% of people belong to this category. The “wolf” hates waking up early and likes to sleep late. They can only concentrate and be productive in the afternoon hours, from 5 pm to 9 pm. They go to bed around 3 am or 4 am, and sleep until about 12 pm.

The dolphin

Finally, 10% of the population belongs to this category. The “dolphin” is a restless sleeper and in many cases suffers from insomnia. They wake up relatively early at about 7:30 am but have difficulty waking up. Their productive hours are from 10 am to 12 pm. From 4 pm to 10 pm they like to relax and they usually fall asleep at about 11:30 pm.  If you want to find out what kind of chronotype YOU are, click here!  Ariana Davila  Seminars Recent Articles
