What is the Food Compass?
A useful “tool” for those of us who want to eat healthly, but are not interested in followin a particular type of diet was developed by scientists from the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University in Boston, Massachusetts. In fact, it is said that the system they created which ranks foods from the least to the most unhealthy and is called “Food Compass” is the most comprehensive and objective that has ever existed. In the Food Compass you can find information about 8,032 foods and beverages, which have been evaluated based on 54 different characteristics. The most unhealthy food gets 1 and the healthiest 100! According to scientists, foods that score 30 and under should be consumed as little as possible. In the middle with a score from 31 to 69 are all the foods that should be consumed in moderation. Among the foods evaluated in groups, snacks and sweets have the lowest average score (16.4), legumes and nuts have the highest score (78.6) and fruits are very close with 73, 9 on average. In fact, some of them, such as raw raspberries, reach 100%. Also, vegetables “score” 69.1, seafood 67, poultry 42.7, beef 24.9. As for the drinks, they are rated from 27.6 if they are soft drinks with sugar and energy drinks, an 67 if they are fruit and vegetable juices. Instant soups and instant noodles, puddings and cheeseburgers get the worst rating when it comes to individual foods. Coffee scores 74, salted almonds 90, pizza only 26. Fruits “reach” 100% and only those that contain a lot of sugar such as bananas, figs and dates rank lower. Olive oil is at 85, unsalted butter at 8 and white sugar at 1. Wholemeal cereals are rated 95, while wholemeal pasta 70 and wholemeal bread 60.
