Delmicron and Florona: What are they – Should we worry?
COVID is still around, with the Omicron variant dominating in all European countries. Before the arrival of 2022, the global medical community was confronted with the terms “Delmicron” and “Florona”. According to the doctors of the Therapeutic Clinic of the Faculty of Medicine of the National and Kapodistrian College of Athens, Theodora Psaltopoulou, Giannis Danasis, Panos Malandrakis and Thanos Dimopoulos, the new terms are not new variants of COVID, but the simultaneous infection with the Omicron and Delta variants (Delmicron) and with Kovid and seasonal flu (Florona). People with weakened immune systems, older adults, and people with underlying diseases are more susceptible to infection with both Omicron and Delta. At the same time, people living in areas with low vaccination coverage are at risk.
According to scientists, although the Omicron variant is the predominant one, the Delta variant has not completely disappeared. In the general population, the likelihood of concurrent infection is low, but in cases of overpopulation, both Delta and Omicron cases can occur. Symptoms of coinfection include fever, cough, nausea, vomiting, headache, runny nose, and sore throat. Florona first appeared in a pregnant woman in Israel who had not been vaccinated against coronavirus or influenza. Doctors report that covid and influenza are transmitted in similar ways, that is, through close contact less than 2 meters apart by talking, coughing, and sneezing. The two infections share symptoms such as cough, fever, and runny nose. The World Health Organization (WHO) stresses that the predominance of the Omicron variant should not lead to forgetting other very common viral infections that occur in the community and can also affect vulnerable people. For this reason, it emphasizes the need for full vaccination with all necessary booster doses against both SARS-CoV-2 and seasonal influenza, as well as compliance with regulations to prevent transmission of both infections.
