5 secrets for longer life expectancy – Earn an extra decade
According to new scientific research, there are five smart habits that can offer us an extra decade of living, free from serious health problems, if we follow them faithfully and make them a part of our lives. In fact, women can add more years (ten) than men (seven). The five “secrets” are:
- Healthy eating
- Daily exercise (at least half an hour of quick walking every day).
- Moderate consumption of alcohol (one glass of wine per day for women and two glasses for men
- Say “No” to smoking
- Maintaining normal weight (body mass index 18.5 to 25).

The study
Some researchers, led by Frank Hu, a professor of epidemiology at Harvard University’s School of Public Health, who published the study in the British Medical Journal (BMJ), analyzed data from nearly 73,200 women and nearly 38,400 men. According to the study, if a 50-year-old man follows at least four of these habits, he will live an average of 31.1 years free from chronic illness, compared to 23.5 years for those who do not follow any of the habits. That equals another seven and a half years of healthy living for that 50-year-old man. For 50-year-old women, the benefit will be even greater (over ten years), as they can expect an average of another 34.4 years of life without chronic illness, compared to 23.7 years for women who don’t even follow one healthy habit. Excessively smoking men (over 15 cigarettes a day), as well as obese men and women (body mass index above 30) have the lowest healthy life expectancy.
