Emotional health: What is it, why is it important-Ways to enhance it
Most of us, when we hear the word “health”, we think of physical health. Few people will think of mental health and even fewer will think about emotional health. The latter is not synonymous with the former, although both terms are often used interchangeably. If we want to define emotional health we would say that it is the connection with our emotions. It is a fundamental aspect of enhancing resilience, self-awareness and satisfaction. It has to do with our ability to manage the good and bad moments that can occur in our daily lives.
Good emotional health means:
I am in contact with my negative emotions and I know how to “work” with them. For example, you are not attacking someone who hurt or angered you, but you are treating them with compassion. I realize it when I become a cruel judge of myself. In this way we will be able to turn the judge into a friend who will show his love and compassion and will make us better with his advice. I’m curious. If you often wonder, ‘Why do I feel this way?’ then you are on the right track. This way you will be able to understand if your feelings stem from an older event.
What does emotional health offer?
Although, as we mentioned before, we tend to ignore emotional health we need to take care of ourselves at this level as well because the benefits are immense. -We will reduce the stress that arises from negative thoughts and thus our physical health will not be affected. -Relationships with others will become more true because we will show empathy and express ourselves in a constructive way. – We will have higher self-esteem. When we know ourselves then we know who we are despite the challenges that may arise in our path. -Finally, we will have more energy because we will focus on the positive rather than the negative.
Ways to enhance emotional health
-Meditate, listen to some music, practice journaling. This way you will have strategies to cope when your emotions have taken over and you have lost your temper. -Exercise and good sleep will drive away stress and negative thoughts and will “clear” your mind so that you have complete control over your emotions. -Focus on the present. Research has shown that mindfuness is associated with decreased emotional reactivity and a strong sense of satisfaction. Mindfulness involves simply concentrating on one thing at a time. -Finally, stay close to your family and friends as their company, even for a few minutes every day, has a significant effect on your emotional health.
