Exercise & Pregnancy: Taboo or must do?
The pandemic seemed to help lots of people understand the multiple benefits of physical exercise. Therefore, special attention should be paid to exercise during pregnancy. In earlier years, exercise was considered a risk to a pregnant woman’s health and consequently of the fetus. Now, research shows that exercise during pregnancy can be extremely beneficial!
What should you keep in mind?
With the gynecologist’s help, the future mother can have a better understanding of all the hormonal changes that are happening to her. For example, hormones such as progesterone will affect her mobility. On the other hand, weight increase affects her center of gravity. So, the woman does not have the same balance and she can’t do all the types of exercise. But, this does not mean that she can’t work out at all! Taking into consideration her physical condition before pregnancy, the woman can experience the benefits of exercise according to her own body.
Benefits
The benefits apply in two areas, the physical and the psychological. More specifically, the development of a fetus changes a woman’s body structure completely. Exercise strengthens the pelvis, the back and the lower limbs. These parts of the body support the development of the fetus and change morphologically during development and childbirth. On a secondary note, postpartum depression and feelings of helplessness that often accompany the mother are reduced by the endorphin release. That creates a sense of well-being and develops self-confidence, which is necessary for a pleasant pregnancy. So if you were afraid to exercise until now, may be it’s time to reconsider!
