Healthy heart: How is it linked to the hour you go to bed
If you go to bed between 10 and 11 at night you may have better cardiovascular health, according to a new study published in the European Heart Journal. The researchers studied data gathered from more than 88,000 volunteers. Specifically, they measured the sleeping habits of the participants through a heart monitor they wore on their wrist. The study was conducted from 2006 to 2016. 3,172 of the participants -t3.6% of the sample – reported that they developed cardiovascular diseases such as heart failure, stroke, chronic ischemic heart disease, ischemic attack. The data showed that the volunteers who went to bed between 10 and 11 at night had the lowest risk of developing a heart problem. Those who slept between 11 and 12 were 11% more likely to have a heart problem, while those who slept after midnight were 35% more likely to develop the same disease. Finally, those who slept before 10 pm had a 38% higher risk of a heart problem. The findings remained the same even when the researchers took into account the duration of sleep and its quality. Also, the findings didn’t have to do with the age or gender of the participants. “Our findings suggest that sleeping too early or too late at night disrupts circadian rhythms. This has a negative effect on cardiovascular health”, the lead researcher of the study, also, a lecturer in Organic Neuroscience at the University of Exeter, Dr David Plans said. “This is probably due to the fact that the probability of seeing the morning light, which regulates the body’s biological clock, decreases when you sleep really late”, he added.
