Horror movies: Why are they good for your health?

There are a lot of people out there who say they don’t like horror movies at all. They prefer other types of movies that are more happy and don’t make them jump out of their chairs! They should change their minds. Because watching thrillers affects your health in a way you could never possibly imagine!

They burn calories!

Yes, that’s right! You do not need to go to the gym. Watch a horror movie, it’s almost like a workout! A study published by the University of Westminster found when ten people were watching horror movies they increased heart rate,  oxygen uptake and carbon dioxide production. The person who was heavier burned 184 calories! This is the same number of calories you burn during a walk!

They relieve the symptoms of depression

The mood improves because of the adrenaline that runs in your blood when you watch something scary and jump on the seat from your anxiety. People with depression experience decreases in their adrenaline levels. Enthusiasm and adrenaline can cause feelings of euphoria. Horror movies also have beneficial effects on reducing stress.

They can boost your immune system

How is this done? When your body is stressed by a scary scene, it will then return to a calm state and the brain will release the hormones dopamine and serotonin. These hormones can then boost your immune system and keep your brain cells active.

They teach you to protect yourself

When you watch a thriller,  you take life lessons. You learn that evil exists in the world and you prepare to escape from dangerous or stressful situations.

They can help you deal with your fears

You are brave if you watch horror movies while you have many phobias. This means that you face your fears. Horror movie screenwriters are smart as they draw some of their ideas from real life and real fears. The more realistic the horror movie, the more we can put ourselves in the place of the characters.
