How much meditation is enough?
More and more people every day are bringing meditation into their lives. Meditation is not just a means to relax and release stress. It has many more benefits that you can discover in this article. There are many different types of meditation. But how do we know if the time we spend meditating is actually effective?
What science says
A 2017 study found that the longer and more often participants meditated, the better they felt. A 2018 study found that negative thoughts were reduced, memory got improved, and anxiety was minimized. In this study, the participants were beginners who practiced meditation daily for 13 minutes over an 8-week period. That showed the importance of consistency in the practice and not of duration per session. So, let’s say that someone has only 5 minutes a day to meditate. Would it be better to meditate for 5 minutes every day or 13 minutes once a month? A study done in 2020 found that those who started meditating and had positive feelings about it, managed to increase both the frequency and duration of their practice. So enjoying what we do probably plays a huge role to stay focused on the moment and not be distracted when we do it. As you can tell, there is no ideal duration for your meditation. It’s not a marathon. It’s more like a “relax and enjoy” process… It’s also the best way to connect with yourself!
