Equality: A multifaceted concept
Equality is a multidimensional issue that concerns society and affects every extension of it. Does it exist or not? And if so, where can we observe it?
What does equality mean?
Equality is ensuring that every person has the same opportunities and possibilities to harness their interests, desires and talents. It aims at the fact that no one should be less likely to gain progress and learn new things because of their gender, nationality, color and characteristics. Many have fought for equality in order to overthrow prevailing beliefs and prejudices that concern characteristics such as race, gender, sexual preferences and disabilities.
Equality today
Today, great progress has been made in society in terms of the degree of equality in it. Now most of us can study, work and engage in the interests and activities we want without restriction. For example, women can go to school, play sports, study and work. People with disabilities can drive, run, play sports, study and work with ease. There have been many changes that concern the attitude of society towards people with different sexual preferences. Overall, equality has spread to many sectors of society such as health, sports, work and education. Source Equality and Human Rights Commission, 2018. Understanding equality.
