Fruits & Vegetables: Which are the “dirty” ones?
Every year since 2004, the Environmental Working Group (EWG), a non-profit organization that promotes healthy living, publishes a list of the most “dirty” fruits and vegetables. By “dirty” we mean those with the highest pesticide concentrations. Their latest list was released a few months ago. It is worth mentioning that strawberries have topped the list of the “dirtiest” fruits for the sixth year in a row.
Other “dirty” fruits and vegetables are:
- spinach
- kale
- nectarines
- apples
- grapes
- cherries
- peaches
- pears
- green and red peppers
- celery
- tomatoes
This list was made after taking into consideration more than 46,000 samples of these foods that were tested by the US Department of Agriculture and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). According to the EWG, pesticides cause many human health problems, so it would be best to visit an organic market for these products. In addition to the list of the “dirty” foods, the EWG also provides us with a list of the 15 most “clean” foods.
The most “clean” fruits and vegetables are:
- avocado
- corn
- pineapple
- onions
- the papaya
- frozen peas
- eggplant
- asparagus
- broccoli
- cabbage
- kiwi
- mushrooms
- melon
- cantaloupe (the orange one)
