MMA: Is it really dangerous?

When MMA starts to take place on a competitive level, then the risk increases. MMA is known to all of us as a hardcore sport which is characterized by “violent” moves between opponents. However, have we ever wondered if this sport is really dangerous? And if so, how much?  Learn the basics of MMA here

MMA risk level

All sports are at risk of injuries as they consist of constant movement. Especially sports that are characterized by fully contact within the opponents, such as hockey, football, basketball, polo and more.  Thus, MMA has risks and injuries for its athletes, so it needs to be very careful during its execution, accompanied by a stable psychological state. After all, safety is everyone’s priority and needs to be taken into account.  It is therefore concluded that MMA is also dangerous if it is not accompanied by great care and aspirations for safety. All of this needs to be accompanied by knowledge of precautionary measures when practicing MMA.

Training and risks in MMA

MMA training is not dangerous if you do the proper warm-up and recovery before and after exercise respectively. When practicing MMA, practitioners need to wear protective equipment in order to prevent injuries.  Basic MMA training is completely safe as it includes shadowboxing, hitting targets, hitting bags and cooperating with another practitioner. As with any physical activity, there is a risk of musculoskeletal injuries, small or large e.g. cramps, fractures, etc.  MMA training begins to become more dangerous when contact with other people begins through practicing with specialized techniques, e.g. of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ).

Competition in MMA

When MMA starts to be in a competitive level for the athlete, then danger increases. It has been shown to be a result of the fact that the practitioners are fully aroused as their ultimate goal is to win and prevail over the employee.  MMA athletes during championship seasons are distinguished by their increased anxiety and stress, often unconsciously, resulting in violent reactions within the race.  “MMA”- Become a professional in MMA Training through Base Training’s workshop    Source  Gerardo, G., 2020. Is MMA Dangerous? – Combat Museum.
