“Me time”: The benefits of spending time with yourself

“Me time”: The benefits of spending time with yourself

Humans are social beings, but we cannot always be around other people. The time we spent with our family and friends is equally important with the time we spent with ourselves.

What time with ourselves has to offer

Personal development

We discover what we love to do, we try new things, we learn, we find ways to express ourselves

Creativity

Research has shown that when we are with ourselves changes occur in our brain that boost creativity.

Social life

We usually think that those who live alone are not so social but this is not the case. Studies have shown that these people had a more active social life.

Better mood

When you spend enough time with yourself then you feel more happy, you get more satisfaction from life and you can better manage stress and anxiety

Better planning

When you have the best company (yourself!) then you think more about life, your goals and ambitions, the changes you have to make to get where you want. The truth is that most people do not spend enough time with themselves.First of all there is the “stigma” out there that if you are alone it is a bad thing.  On the other hand there are many people who do not have experience as they are constantly surrounded by other people. Finally, there are many who worry that when they will be spending time alone, negative thoughts and feelings may come to the surface.

How to spend time with yourself

The first thing you need to do is decide when you would like to have an “appointment” with yourself. Choose the exact time and moment of the day and tell your family and friends that you will dedicate time to yourself. If you can look at the ceiling lost in your thoughts then it’s fine. Many people cannot do that. You could go for a walk, read a book, do ahobby. It is important to reduce, as much as possible, your social media “intake” so that you stop comparing yourself to others and focus on yourself.
