Results of new research
The University College of London’s Psychiatric Department (UCL) did a research regarding sedentary living and depression and is trying to persuade teens around the world to change habits before it’s too late . The researchers analyzed data from nearly 4,300 teens at the time-points of 12, 14 and 16 years old, who were asked to wear special devices to record their daily movements for at least ten hours for three days. It was found that adolescents who followed a regular sedentary life at all three ages (12, 14 and 16 years) had an average of 28% more depressive symptoms at the age of 18. It was also shown that every additional hour of sedentary behavior per day at the age of 12, 14 and 16 years was associated with an increase in depression by 11%, 8% and 10.5%, respectively, at the age of 18. On the other hand, physical activity was proven to be a “lifesaver” against depression. In particular, each additional hour, even of light physical activity at 12, 14 and 16, was associated with lower depression by 10%, 8% and 11% respectively. It is noted that depressive symptoms such as poor mood, lack of pleasure, difficulty concentrating, were assessed based on a relevant questionnaire.
