Social media: How do they affect our mood?

Social media: How do they affect our mood?

You wake up in the morning. You open your window. The sun is shining, the birds are chirping. “Another beautiful day begins”, you think, even if you have a lot of work to do. Then you turn on your cell phone. You check your emails, the newsfeed on your social networks. You take a look at the news. You leave the cell phone down. Suddenly you do not feel very well. Not physically, but psychologically. According to a study conducted by the University of Essex, just a few minutes on social media are enough to make our moods worse.  Specifically, according to the study conducted on about 1000 users of Twitter and Youtube, it took 2 to 4 minutes for them to feel bad after reading and seeing unpleasant news, especially about the pandemic. It is worth mentioning that the users did not deliberately search for the negative news. They just ‘’run’’into them whise surfing on the internet. “It only takes two minutes of exposure to negative coronavirus news to experience the consequences. Given that many people spend five to ten minutes a day on COVID-19 news, we can make a rough estimate of the emotional cost of this habit,” the researchers said. But there is another side to the coin. The same study showed that the negative mood of the users became positive when they saw posts with acts of kindness! In fact, the researchers said that it should be taken into consideration the balancing between the negative and positive news  while checking the social media and news on the internet.
