Women and Weights: A taboo that is now “broken” – Tips for personal trainers

Women and Weights: A taboo that is now “broken” – Tips for personal trainers Women seem to … have been bored with cardio exercise and are now taking their chances  in weight training. According to experts, this development is well received! Physical strength can stimulate self-confidence but also self-esteem. For personal trainers, it is particularly important to support and encourage women working out to grab the dumbbells and not … rest in cardio exercises. Women and girls can have many benefits through weight training. Some of them are:

– They reduce the risk of injury

– They achieve better cardiovascular health

– They strengthen the bones

– They prevent diabetes

However, the more women move to the dumbbells, the more challenges the gym instructor faces. It is necessary to state that at the moment there is no sufficient scientific research that has been done on weight training for women. At the same time, the – proven – differences that exist between the two sexes even today are for many still too difficult to accept and either distorted or not even discussed! However, the truth is that we are not so different. Studies have shown that comparing men and women who have been trained in the same way, most differences are related to the size of the muscles rather than the sex. This proves that a man and a woman with the same muscle size should have exactly the same strength. It would be good for personal trainers to … remove phrases such as “female push-ups” from your vocabulary and get rid of  mental  images of  women  holding … pink weights. However, keep in mind some important facts:

-The two sexes have different muscle composition. Women are less prone to fatigue.

-Feminine hormones, especially those related to menstruation, can affect the exercise program of a trainee as well as rehabilitation.

If you understand these differences, then you will be able to create a program that will help your female clients achieve their desired muscle mass and gain strength.

The importance of metabolism

The muscular composition affects the energy substrates used by men and women during training. Typically, women have 6% -12% more fat than men. Also, the female body can better handle the fat, turning it into energy, during exercise. In this way, she can achieve a longer workout duration.

The right program for the training women

In case that a female client has as a primary objective the increase of muscle mass, then personal trainers should keep in mind that she will be much more resistant to fatigue than a man. It is known that fewer repetitions in exercises (6 to 10) achieve an increase in muscle mass but also a greater force for the athlete. However, because women can “endure” more exercise, it is likely that the majority will have more benefits by doing more vigorous workouts, with super sets and timed breaks. The gym instructor could try to “tire” the trainees faster than they usually do, since they are meant to help them overcome themselves and achieve an increase in their muscle mass.
